About Jennings - v - Simpson
I have much documentation on my Great Grandfather Henry Jennings who was Superintendent of St Georges Hall Law Courts Liverpool until his untimely death in 1903. Previously bridewell keeper then to Inspector in Liverpool Police Force he was a member of the Police band from its commence in 1869. He was educated at the Blue Coats Hospital. He wrote in a diary in 1874 `Soon after the expiration of my time in school (Viz March 1862) application was made to the Govenor for a boy to enter the grocery business as an apprentice. I was consulted and desired that my mother should be referred to with a view to her approval. I told her that it was my desire to answer the application. The application was to Mr John Clegg Grocer, Corner of Marybone & Bispham Street. On the first Monday accompanied by my mother, I went to the shop above named. The Locality was any thing but what you may term respectable, and the shop had not the appearance of an establishment whereby to learn a knowledge of the grocery trade befitting an apprentice to face the world in a business like manner. My mother at once objected to my being bound as an apprentice that day, and suggested that I should remain for one month on trial, (indoor) during which time I found Mr & Mrs Clegg to be very homely and comfortable people, but still there was not the slightest possibility of me ever learning anything approaching a trade which would enable me in after years to enter the service of a commercial house without having to learn the rudiment of the business thoroughly. Consquently upon the termination of the month, my mother decided that I should not be bound apprentice to Mr. Clegg, thus causing me to leave his service. I had many changes afterwards, firstly I went to the Shipbuilding business (Caleb Smith, Bath Lane) from there to Messrs Evans & Sons Brunswick Dock and from there I was bound apprentice to the Iron Ship Buildings to Jones Quiggan & Co. which service I left and went to sea. I took a pierhead jump at Birkenhead on board the War Cloud bound for Bombay skipper Captain Henderson` Henry left the sea and joined the police force on 16th June 1868, his wage as a class 4 constable was 20/-. In 1873 he became the Bridewell Keeper his wages rising to 30/-. In 1884 he became Superintendent of St Georges Hall and my Great Grandmother became house keeper there also. Salary £150 and £50 repectively.
In 1888 Henry Jennings was appointed sword bearer to the Corportion of Liverpool.
In 1900 he wrote a book on St. Georges Hall, including photos he took of the wonderful Minton Floor. Unfortunately in February 1903 after several weeks of illness he died at the age of 54. I have found lots of newspaper articles of his life and his death. On his 50th Birthday the Corporation presented him with an Illuminated Address of which I have a photograph but would dearly love to find the original. I have a collecton of wonderful photographs wh
